12 Crafts of Christmas – Day 1- Old Book Advent Calendar

Well it’s the first day of the 12 crafts of Christmas series Roo and I are hosting for this year!  Here is the trailer we put together:

This will involve 12 DAYS of crafts that you can make to prepare for the holidays or just to watch for fun while you’re doing your own Christmas crafts… We hope to distract you from the stress and anxiety of Christmas and focus on setting aside time to have fun with friends and family!

Some of the projects are related to home decor, some can be used to make as presents, and some are just for fun. Skills included are some basic sewing, easy crocheting or knitting, kid crafts, and a little scrapbooking/altered type projects. From November 19-30, there will be one craft video posted each evening. Though we are by no means experts in any of this, we thought it would be fun to share what we like to do.  Because after all, that’s what life is about, sharing, growing, and connecting with people.  So feel free to comment with tips on more effective ways of getting the same results…. or maybe an altered version of one of our projects that you came up with! We love getting new ideas!

I have to warn you, so far these videos are turning out way longer than we had planned, so I’ll try and post minute markers as to where the meat is if you’re short on time. A little shenaniganing is expected but not completely necessary to make any of these crafts were are carrying.

image

Day 1’s craft is going to be an ongoing thing throughout the 12 days.  Because it’s a rather lengthy project, it was not completed in entirety before video one was scheduled to be posted. So I thought it might be fun to do a final reveal on day 12. And because it’s an advent calendar, December 1st will see it’s first use anyway…    Also, I think it’s the kind of project that sparks ideas as you go.  So I don’t think it will ever be completely finished. I plan on adding photos to it for upcoming years as well.

Old Book Advent Calendar

For this craft you will need:

  1. 25 Old books
  2. Mod podge
  3. Binder Clips or some sorta clamp
  4. Decorative fabric and paper
  5. Embellishments…  stickers… stamps… buttons… etc…
  6. Optional: paint or watercolor..
  7. An exacto knife, or anything you might think will work to cut through the pages easily.
  8. Coffee or hot chocolate
  9. Snacks

As far as the books go, I’ve collected them over the years at yard sales, flea markets, or consignment type shops. You can use new books, but I just feel the old falling apart ones give a little charm.  But after all, you are going to decorate them how you like, so you can give em a little antique look if they aren’t quite old enough. Or you could go for a more modern looking set. You might use newer books and make a sleeker design. Maybe even use a set of Christmas childrens books? There are endless ideas you could come up with….  easiest and more inexpensive way is to come up with something that uses stuff you already have.

And even if you don’t want to go to all the trouble to make an advent calendar, you could also just make a few to give as as photo gifts for grandparents or whomever!  Just use the book as a frame and decorate!

So here is Video 1 for the 12 Crafts of Christmas:  I reccomend watching in HD.

I’ve uploaded it to the max 1080, but 720 is also acceptable… lower than that and the craft is harder to view…   so just adjust your quality because I think the default is 360.  And on top of that, we were forced to record at night… and we used the ipad since I have yet to get a new camera since it busted…  so overall filming quality was not at it’s best from the get go…   yikes!

The craft actually starts around minute 9…  heh..

Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for our special guest in tomorrow’s video!

Bible Journaling

Fitty

So Roo and I cracked open our new Journaling Bibles so we thought we’d share a couple of the pages we were working on.

The bible we both have is the ESV Journaling Bible from Crossway.  Besides being adorable, it’s small enough to carry around and enjoy wherever whenever. Available on Amazon here: ESV journaling bible

I started in Nehemiah because that’s where we are at church right about now. My first journal was actually something our Pastor said because I loved it so much. “You cannot hide a heart that has been broken by God.”

image

Though I plan to be pretty messy with this Bible, I like to kinda jot important things on sticky notes first, then decide what I want the focus of the journaling to be.  So most of the time, it will probably be my favorite scripture or passage from the pages, but sometimes, you just need a beautiful statement like this to look back on.

And as Roo and I were journaling together, we decided to go back and highlight all the verses she had already learned in Awana, so I did the same in mine.  So of course, we started with John 3:16:

image

So if you don’t know the Gospel, there ya have it right there:

image

Which is the whole point of EVERYTHING…  funny how I didn’t learn that in the Roman Catholic church growing up…

Roo went on to 1 Corinthians as well. She used some stamping on this page and then actually colored them in with highlighters. We both sponged a bit of ink for our backgrounds.

image

We are having so much fun doing this, and I think it’s really helping her and I memorize scripture as well.  We hope you’ll join us and share your journaling! God Bless and have a great week!

YTLH Double Time- JULY- Sketch

The YouTube Layout Hop for July is now under way….

If you’d like to join in on the action, click here:  YTLH

It was extra special for us because Roo got to join in on the fun this month!  She did an awesome job!

The theme this month was “Sketch.”  For those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s when you base your layout on a “sketch” or an outline of sorts.  This design was created by one of our members: Meital Tene Zeevi

11666052_684371831695105_1433003615295373664_n

Sooooo…  we had to base our projects off of this sketch.

Roo used some pics from last summer of her and her cousin Luke at the beach and boardwalk…  (from the same pile of pics I’m using for the Beach mini album)

11813505_1020889194617946_7149382303617063794_n

I love seeing the evolving mess that occurs when she gets into her work.  lol.  And I guess it’s not so far off from what my side of the table looks like after a project…

 Roo’s layout:

image

Stuff Roo used:

Mists
Masks
Stamps
Washi Tape
Stickers, Stickers, Stickers…
Cardstock from Chalk it Up workshop kit

imageimage

At some point she got into her sticker bin and then it was all over… anything went…  Hawaiian… Halloween… Hello Kitty…  iCarly…  and I think she even says something in her video about not caring that it’s not Halloween…

And speaking of the vid, here it is:

Fitty’s Layout:

And for my layout, I used a recent pic from the week before of Roo in the grass patiently awaiting  for R5 to hit the stage.

image

Stuff Fitty used:

Close to my heart “Chalk it up” workshop kit

Close to my heart craft heater

Heidi Swapp Texture paste
Heidi Swapp Planner embellishments
Heidi Swapp Color Shine
Heidi Swapp Mini Stencils

imageimage

I used something new in this layout… Texture Paste!  Love it!  It dried pretty fast and I used it just like modeling paste.  A bit thinner and the Heidi Swapp brand I got came in a bunch of colors.  Really happy with the results!  And I even sewed through it… (don’t do that)

So you decide who stuck to the sketch best…   I think we both kinda strayed a bit…

Here’s my vid:

Both our vids have a similar intro.  We decided to get silly since Roo was joining in the fun…  But we kinda ran outta time due to the fact we were leaving for PA for four days and getting back today, so that left no editing time or uploading time.  And we all know it can sometimes take 3 days for your video to upload.  hahaha

Enjoy the weekend!

#LoveSummerArt

So there’s this amazing Hashtag Party goin’ on this weekend and it’s all kinds of Artastic!!  #LOVESUMMERART

image

If you’re an artist/creator youtuber, you can join the facebook group here: Youtube Channel Art and Crafts

If you are not a youtube creator and just want to enjoy the Arty vids, then just simply type in the hashtag #LoveSummerArt in the search bar on youtube and see what comes up!  I happened upon this by accident really… lol.  So as usual, I had like a day to come up with something… but it gave me an opportunity to pick up something I started and never finished.

So here is my #LoveSummerArt vid:

I had started a “beach” mini last June, and then with all the moving that went on this year, my arts and crafts were mostly in boxes so I never got the chance to finish it, but now that I’m back in business, I’m aiming to get it done within the next couple weeks.

I used this printable canvas for the cover image as well as an image of my daughter and my neice running on the beach.

image

Love this stuff! I use it for sewing projects, but it also works great for scrapbooking. This brand was a bit sturdier than I like it to be for sewing projects, but it’s great for this purpose. It’s made by Printworks.

image

So I did one 2 page layout using that large canvas photo of my daughter and my neice, and another 2 page layout using 4 photos of my daughter and nephews.

image

It was so much fun, I hope to get another video up by monday… or perhaps Roo might wanna do one too…  Weekends are always super busy so it’s hard to get stuff together, but we will try!

image

So anyway, we will surely share whatever we come up with next!  Have a great week!

Fitty & Roo

Scrapping Double with Fitty and Roo!

image

Last night Roo decided it was time she made her own crafty process video.  And I have to say she did a pretty darn good job…  lol.  She even narrated it!

Since I still wanted to use the same photo she stole from me… I decided to make a game of it and have Roo and I both scrap process the same photo.  So I made a part 1 with Roo, and a part 2 with me.

So here’s Roo’s layout!

image

She is OBSESSED with mists and masks!  Almost as much as modeling paste.  Had we not run out, she probably would’ve used that too…

image

So I call this a success because no ink was spilled! ( I just jumped in whenever I saw something about to fall off the table…  )  I think she’s definitely leaning toward a more mixed media preference…  I think her finished product is beautiful!  Even though at some point I think she says that she wished she had purple mist…

And here is mine:

image

I used one mask and one mist.  lol.   We both used watercolors. And we both used the same Heidi Swap Heart embellishments.

image

That black ink is just a speedball India Ink.  My new fav…  when you want the blackest black.  Though I have no other black ink to compare to…  it does the job quite nicely enough that I’m not looking.

And here are our process videos!

Hope you like em’!

HAPPY JULY 4th!   Hope everyone has a safe, happy, and blessed weekend!

New Jersey Scrapbook

So in order to learn about New Jersey, we’re putting together a kinda scrap book. We started it on ART day last week and it’s going to be a more long term project. We’ll add to it as we get more information. (I know what you’re thinking… isn’t every day ART day?) The answer is yes. Every day is ART day in some fashion… but since thursdays in middle school were with my fav Art teacher Mrs. Falk, I’ve just designated that day to be Art day here.

I used one of these binder handbooks that have just a kraft kinda cover so you can paint em, or glue stuff to em… really anything. You could even wallpaper em if you want.
Scrapbook-homeschool-fitty-new jersey-art-craft-geography

I honestly haven’t been to a craft store in a while, so I’m not sure if other brands make these… in this size. But you could also get one that’s already got a pattern on it… Or just use a regular old binder with the clear pocket in front to add a title. Anything!

Scrapbook-homeschool-fitty-new jersey-art-craft-geography-1

Eleanor decided she wanted to paint it like the beach because that’s her favorite part of New Jersey. So she made a sky… a little bit of grass… the water…

And then she got the idea to add some shells that were in the Hermit crab cage. And we actually did get em from the Jersey Shore, so it was perfect.

Scrapbook-homeschool-fitty-new jersey-art-craft-geography-5

And then I introduced her to modeling paste. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

SHE’S NOW ADDICTED. to modeling paste.

It started as just making some texture for the sand at the bottom… then it turned into a way to glue on the shells… it was everywhere! But that’s ok, because that’s why Grandpa made us these craft tables for easy clean up! Plus this sewing mat I have just ends up being a paint, glue, mess catcher anyway. But don’t worry too much about your kids doing any damage with modeling paste. It gets almost gummy when you wet it, so it peels off of most surfaces.

So anyway, now she wants to use modeling paste for everything. She used it in place of a glue stick in the book to attach paper to paper…

but hey, it’s her book so I let her do whatever she wanted!

And of course she topped it off with pink Color Shine and pink glitter. For the inside front page, we drew a picture of New Jersey and colored it.

Scrapbook-homeschool-fitty-new jersey-art-craft-geography-3

Yes, that’s modeling paste holding on that “Home sweet Home” card…

Scrapbook-homeschool-fitty-new jersey-art-craft-geography-4

So far her favorite thing she learned was the the State fruit was the blueberry… because she loves to eat em and one of her buddies Connor calls them Bloobs… I should ask him how he spells that.. Bluebs? Seems like I can get in trouble with that one…

Scrapbook-homeschool-fitty-new jersey-art-craft-geography-2

She can’t seem to remember who the Governor is, but the capital sticks a bit better. lol.

So anway, it’s a work in progress… we’ll update when we get more in there.

Happy MONDAY!

God Bless New Jersey!

Mother’s Day on the farm…

When all the grandkids are together, it’s always an opportunity for an interesting photo shoot…

Fitty-roo-madebyfitty-photography-snazaroo face paint - party-fair-michaels-craft

I was shopping on saturday for a specific project I need to get finished in the next week and in my travels I came across some kids face paint sets.  Roo immediately flipped because she’s been begging me to get face paint since probably the first time she ever got her face painted.  So I’ve been meaning to look up some face paint online, but low and behold we ran into some Snazaroo kits in Michaels.  And I know this brand, because it’s what her school always used, so I know she hasn’t had any kinda reactions to it.  So after a vote between Roo, my neice Norah, and myself, we decided we’d get it and bring it to the farm on Mother’s Day to share with my nephews as well.

02-Fitty-roo-madebyfitty-photography-snazaroo face paint - party-fair-michaels-craft

Well, I can’t lie and say they weren’t excited.

They immediately started fighting over who gets painted first.  But they ended up letting Roo go first since she was the only one who made up her mind what she wanted to be.  Then needless to say, once the oldest decided, a story started evolving and a pack of wolves was born.

Though I think the story started taking a sad twist when I found them like this:

20140512_160308000_iOS

EEEK!  And it’s even sadder that I can’t say this is the first time I’ve found them playing out a scene like this.  Last time, roo was tied to a pole and I believe they were making indian sounds while hopping on one foot circling her.  I’m not sure if we should burn the TV’s or if these are school playground games…   But regardless, roo always seems to be the victim.  I’m starting to have flashbacks of my own childhood through her. AHHHH!

06-Fitty-roo-madebyfitty-photography-snazaroo face paint - party-fair-michaels-craft

But not to worry, she came out ok.  I mean, I don’t think butterflies are a wolf’s favorite meal anyhow.  Especially a mother’s day meal…. despite that this butterfly was particularly meaty, turned out the wolves weren’t that hungry anyway.

03-Fitty-roo-madebyfitty-photography-snazaroo face paint - party-fair-michaels-craft

See!  She’s happy to be getting out though.

And I’m happy to report that this face paint was quite easy to wash off.  The weekend before the girls got their faces painted at a town-wide yard sale thing… and they stayed “colors” until about wednesday.  So points for Snazaroo!  And points that it has Roo’s name in it!  If it makes Roo feel more Snazzy, I like it.

05-Daddy-daughter-Fitty-roo-madebyfitty-photography-snazaroo face paint - party-fair-michaels-craft

This dumpster was real excited to be my prop of choice for many of the photos…   heh…

So I’m now ordered to bring the face paint to every family gathering, so I’ve certainly started something.  And it beats having them sit inside and play video games!

Queen Norma and the April Youtube Layout Hop

Fitty-madebyfitty-scrapbooking-american crafts-studio calico-mixed media-pets-norma-dogs-layout-scrap-service-03

We all have pets.  Whether it be an animal or not is something else.  It could be an insect… like how every time Eleanor finds a stink bug she captures it,  and names it Cliffy after our late Boston Terrior, and forces it to live in Minnie Mouse’s playhouse, a fish bowl, or an empty fruit snacks box. (Whatever the home of choice is at the moment, it never makes it through the night).

Or I guess I could turn the pointer to myself since I have a pet rock Kevin.

Here’s the pic of him I used for my last post.  Apparently, it’s the only one I can find in my media library right now.  And I’m too lazy to go upstairs and snap a new one.

1016651_613767861996750_1565889926_n

So back to pets that are actually animals… like the ewesh… ya know, cats and dogs…  They are quite special and make quite a dent in our emotional lives.  So I was very excited when this month’s YouTube Layout Hop’s theme was pets.

If you haven’t heard about the Hop, it’s a monthly event that’s almost at it’s 3rd birthday.  It was founded by Xochitl Zoe Aparicio aka Zoe CraftyX.  It’s like a show and tell of scrapbooking, cards, mixed media, smashing… etc.  Anyone is welcome to join in.  Let me know if you’re interested, I can direct you to the facebook group page.  And the best part is, there’s a sponsor every month so some lucky commenter  wins a prize.

Fitty-madebyfitty-scrapbooking-american crafts-studio calico-mixed media-pets-norma-dogs-layout-scrap-service-04

So I had to do a mixed media for a Studio Calico class a couple weeks ago, so I figured the textures would work well with a doggie photo.  Although since Roo donned Norma Queen of Arendelle, pink sparkles and silver glitter probably would’ve also worked.  (ok, so I just typed Arendelle into a facebook search to check the spelling… and I just found out that I can request friendship with Elsa and Anna. And probably the others I’m sure…  wait..  they’re not real right?)

Fitty-madebyfitty-scrapbooking-american crafts-studio calico-mixed media-pets-norma-dogs-layout-scrap-service-01

So this layout uses the following:

– Gesso

– Mr. Hueys Mists

– Some masking with stencils

– Modeling paste

– bit of layering

– nip of doodling

– tid of twine

Fitty-madebyfitty-scrapbooking-american crafts-studio calico-mixed media-pets-norma-dogs-layout-scrap-service-02

It’s actually such a coincidence that the Hop’s theme was pets this month because it’s Norma’s BIRTHDAY TODAY!

Wonderwoman-10 (1 of 1) -ca

So Happy 10th Birthday Norms!  We love you and thank you for all your patience letting Eleanor use you as a headwear model… ( and all that other stuff too  🙂

And here’s my vid for the YTLH!

Have  a great week everyone!
