Bible Journaling – Esther

So this past Sunday I kinda woke up feeling less that peppy. lol…
But I have to say… after getting to church and as soon as my worship team showed up,  I immediately felt better. They are such an awesome group of people. They are my life group.

We are currently going through the book of Esther… and I love this book because it reads just like a story. Esther is an amazing woman who God used to carry out his work in saving the Jews from total destruction under the evil plans of Haman.

img_3497

One thing Pastor said on Sunday that was very encouraging was this: “God works through flawed people and circumstances for his purpose.”

Well… that wasn’t the only thing… lol. but that was one of the thoughts I wrote in my bible. And it’s absolutely true. He can use us... every one of us… no matter what we think of ourselves. No matter what we think we can and can’t do. No matter how bottom-dwelling and helpless we feel.

img_3498

I struggle when it comes to music… and every time I feel like I should just call it quits, something seems to force me back in. I don’t know why. I always feel less than adequate. I had made a decision when we came to this church that I wasn’t even going to get involved in the musical aspect. And here I am, leading the team with my husband… lol. I’m not trying to compare myself to Esther. I don’t think saving a population of God’s people is written in my story. All I’m saying is, sometimes we just need to trust where God puts us. I don’t think I will ever feel completely right for the job. Perhaps this is an opportunity for me to grow. But if anyone is feeling this way too, perhaps this can encourage them. Just go with it. Try your best. There are no accidents. And pray… a lot.

So here is my process vid. I pretty much only used watercolor and some journaling pen. Much like this post… the journaling went in a completely different direction than originally planned… lol.

Thanks so much for stopping by! The music in this video is created by my amazing friend Jhoi!

Check his music out here:  https://soundcloud.com/jhoioh    He truly inspires me and countless others.

Have a great rest of your week!

God Bless!

Bible Journaling- Psalm 42:1

Psalm 42:1

“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.” ESV

image

I actually drew this because my husband said to.  Lol.  Nothing mysterious or abstract… it’s quite a literal illustration of the words. It’s a female deer as of now… but who knows… maybe I’ll add some antlers down the line.  Maybe it’s my dog…   yea, I think I’ll add those antlers.

image

That’s a little better…

So I’m starting to really like using crayons in my Bible. They just seem to work really well with the type of paper…   who knew?!  Besides that I used mostly my journaling pens, a pencil, and a couple gelatos.

I asked some friends of mine if I could highlight some of their music in these videos and was so happy when they agreed!  So in this video, my friend Jhoi supplied the tracks.  You can check out his music here:

It’s just gorgeous gorgeous stuff! Definitely go take a listen.

And here’s my process video:

Thanks for taking some time with me and Jhoi today! Have a blessed week and just remember, when things get tough… be the deer. Pant for the flowing streams and everything else will follow rightly!

Bible Journaling – Genesis

Actually, this is more toward Bible Arting…  I wasn’t even going to add words, but I did. Not sure I like em yet. But sometimes you like things later. When it’s too fresh, you can’t look at things right. You have to give it the time test and then see how ya feel about it.

So … very exciting for me is this new Bible! I am a big-time Autumn fan, and this one has leaves all over the cover.

image

So this is my very first page in this Bible.

And… I decided to start with Genesis. And not because it’s the first book in the Bible, but because it’s been calling me to go back and re-visit it. And there also happens to be a giant series of excellent sermons done by a friend of ours who is a Pastor at Island Baptist Church in LBI on Genesis so I already have accompanying viewable commentary.

You can check that out here: HopeofLBI.com

Honestly, I kinda thought I would lean more towards the chunky cluttered look for this new Bible, but after doing one page, I think it may be going in the black pen and crayon direction with little to no over-time expanding width.

image

I think it’s just a pretty bible on it’s own. So when I started drawing, I kinda got zoned out. And it reminded me of when I was young and how I used to zone out for hours listening to music and drawing. Like your brain gets taken over and you’re just floating. Sometimes it happens when you’re playing music too… I guess it could happen doing anything you enjoy. Sometimes I wonder if this is the real means to “getting high” that God gave us. I have no idea what that feels like from drugs… but I can imagine it is a sublime temporary escape. I do know what drunk feels like, and I used to feel like I had to have a drink before playing out somewhere or going to a social event so that I wouldn’t be so nervous, shy, and unfriendly. And I remember my late night song-writing rituals involved a glass of merlot. And the kind of songs that followed were tributes to sin. Shocker.

How did this turn into a past time confession? I mean, I don’t think I drank a lot, usually one glass of something was enough… but like I said. It was a means to change myself and how I related to this world. I now know that I don’t need that. I still feel nervous and anxious in certain situations, but in every instance I have to remind myself that I can’t do anything alone. I have to give it to God because it’s too big for me. And it’s awesome to get totally wrapped up in creating using what the Ultimate Creator gave us.

image

It always looks like I’m giving myself an F for my work in these pics…   maybe I should use a different plate to hold my little pencils and erasers…

When I think about Genesis 1, I think about all the awesome things God created. And though it talks about day, and night, and land, and water, and animals, and man, and all that…  TREES.… are my fav. It’s no secret. I think a lot of people like drawing trees. They’re just so pretty. So for me, this represents on of my favorite things God created. And I kinda drew them in an autumn state, because that’s also my favorite season as I said earlier. And it just goes along with the style of the Bible. So… yea. Or maybe it’s just that I finally watched the movie version of “Into the Woods…”  Mother said, straight ahead, not to delay or be mislead! I should’ve heeded her advice… but he seemed so nice…

Ok, so I did a process vid and sped it up to 6 minutes… though in real time probably took about an hour.

I mainly just used my journaling pens, and gelatos and crayons to color it in. And sometimes I use my bible highlighters to color as well. So I think I did that a little bit in the end just to bring out certain words…

image

So I may add more trees as the mood strikes, but I think this is enough for the Genesis forest so far.

Here’s the speedy process:

Happy Friday and have an awesome weekend!

Love,

Bible Journaling – John 13:34-35

image

So this week’s (actually last week’s) Bible verse for memorization is John 13:35.

But I decided to add in 34 for my Bible journaling purposes.  I wanted the main idea of loving one another to stick out. So I used the text from part of verse 34, but boxed around the whole thing so I would be reminded to pay attention to the rest of it.

ESV John 13 vs. 34-35

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

image

“By this all people will know that you are my disciples”

I try to tell this to the kids in my life frequently… and it’s a really hard thing for kids to understand because there’s a level of self that’s a bit bigger than it should be when you’re young. I tell them that just because someone does something hurtful to you, that doesn’t mean you need to do something even more hurtful back. There is no need for “get even.” The best thing you can give back after being scorned is love. Like one example our Pastor gave; tipping big for the absolute worst service at a restaurant. Wouldn’t that look different than giving the usual lousy tip for lousy service. That is what makes you look like a Christian.

This week Pastor had us write down something on an index card. He had us write down something that was done to us that really hurt us and also who did it. Then he had us tear it up and urged us to forgive that person in our hearts if we haven’t already. No good can come from hoarding grudges. I might try this with the kids, but really I’m open to ideas. I’m not sure if you just don’t get it till you’re older… but I also feel like most adults would rather get even then forgive and show love. I’m by no means perfect, I hold onto those negative feelings as well as anybody, but I’ve learned to forgive just like I hope I’ve been forgiven for past hurts I have dealt. After all, usually what you’re mad about really isn’t that important in the end. And forgiveness is so rewarding.

So here is the process for the Bible Journaling. I kept it pretty simple again, and actually I used Roo’s bible this time because I kinda messed mine up… but that Barnes and Noble giftcard I’m using to spread paint just got emptied on another journaling Bible online. It was a present from one of my piano students (THANK YOU!) I had to spend an extra $3 over the $25 GC, but there is a coupon running now.. so I got a Bible that was already on sale, then an extra 20% off that… and free shipping, so the total was $28.  So my first journaling Bible might serve as a tester now… we’ll see.

Here’s the coupon link.

Barnes and Noble Coupon

So HERE is actually the process video:

The lettering was actually inspired by a sticker…  I went to use it, but it was too big, so I just copied the style. Then I added some more stickers at the end that kinda went with the color theme.

Hope everyone is having an inspiring week so far!  God Bless!

Vacation Bible School at Shadyrest Bible Church

It’s been a busy week with my nephews over so instead of some bible journaling, I thought I’d share some pics and vids from our adventures at VBS. We’ve been having a blast exploring Egypt and hearing the story of Joseph.

Here’s a little trailer we put together with the iMovie app:

And here are some pics!

image

Here they are with their family leader, Valerie.

image

And last night my niece Norah joined us as well. They all had a little too much fun with the eyeliner…

image

The shopkeepers had them busy doing lots of crafts.

image

image

image

But I think the favorite was the Food tent….

image

This mummy photo op was a particularly fun spot.

And then when we got home, after a nice walk around town, we made a giant fort in the living room.

Bible Journaling – 1 Corinthians 10:31

So the next verse in our scripture memory challenge is:

1 Corinthians 10:31English Standard Version (ESV)

31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

image

I decided to shorten it just a little and illustrate the “eat or drink” part. Lol…  This was one of those pages that I didn’t really think about…  I didn’t even plan on doing any bible journaling after church, but it just kinda happened. The mood took over.  Actually, it was a very inspired day Sunday.  I ended up doing a lot of things that didn’t fall into the “cleaning and laundry” category.  Everything fell more into the “drink coffee, eat ice cream, and get creative” category.  I think the Pastor’s sermon kinda inspired me. He was talking about how if you stopped and just looked around at this world…. this creation…. how could you not know God exists? And again… Truth was spoken. I mean seriously… how could you not know? How could anything but an awesome creator imagine this stuff? Why are there trees and why do I care how pretty they look?

So here is a speedy process with some YouTube music. Lol.  I was sick of hearing myself talk.

And here is a link to Our Church’s YouTube channel! You can check out all the sermons so far here:

Bible Journaling – Ephesians 2:8-9 and Illustrated Faith unboxing

So this week I got an amazing surprise in the mail from a dear friend! This women amazes me.  Even if her own life is in chaos, she still seems to find time to touch others on a daily basis!

image

So she sent me one of these devotional kits I’ve been stalking for a while on various social medias. Shanna Noel is the founder of this product and it’s really taken off since we’ve all been gettin’ artsy fartsy with our bibles.

Check out the website here: Illustrated Faith

So I was so excited to dive into this! I decided to do an unboxing to start of the bible journaling video this week. So check it out if you’re curious as to what is in this devotional kit!

Kevin also makes an appearance in this video since he’s been MIA for awhile…

This week’s verse for the #Scripturememorychallenge was:

Ephesians 2: vs. 8-9 NIV

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

I added 10 in there too…  just coz. This is the NIV translation. My journaling bible is ESV so it’s slightly different, but that’s the gist.

ESV VERSION:

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

I can’t wait for this weeks sermon to be posted, it was so good, our Pastor explained this verse perfectly. And you can expect that in EVERY sermon, Pastor Pina brings the Gospel! And he doesn’t bring it in a basket of flowers with a pat on the back. He brings it in a bucket of conviction with a kick in the pants.

Here is a link to the page where you can listen or view sermons.  There is also some there from our good friend Booky!  lol  So this weeks isn’t there yet, but check back and I will also try to let you know when it is.

Shadyrest Bible Church Sermons

We’ve been going through the Sola series:

They are as follows: “Sola Scriptura” (Scripture Alone); “Sola Gratia” (Grace Alone); “Sola Fide” (Faith Alone); “Solus Christus” (Christ Alone); and “Soli Deo Gloria” (To God Alone Be Glory).

This past week we were on Sola Gratia. Grace alone. And this verse from Ephesians speaks it clearly. It is through God’s Grace that you have been saved! Not of your own works! You can’t save yourself! You can’t check off a list of good works to get yourself to heaven. You’ll just have to come back for the sermon by Pastor Pina to get the idea is this makes no sense to you. Because really, he did such an amazing job of digging into this, I couldn’t even begin… lol.

image

And amazingly enough, I was shown grace through this gift I got from my friend. She purchased this gift, had it sent to me, and I received it. I didn’t do anything good to be able to enjoy this awesome gift! I did nothing at all! She paid for it and gave it to me even though I’m a rotton sinner. Lol.  Ironically enough, Pastor uses this example in his sermon… and then exactly as he said it, it happened to me days later. Amazing. That’s what the song Amazing Grace is about people! It’s amazing because we don’t deserve it.

So anyway, here’s my process video. It couldn’t be more fitting this week as I share the Grace that was shown to me for me to be able to get creative with my bible journaling through the gift of a friend. I got a little messy with this weeks journaling page… but like I say in the video… there’s no wrong way to do this! Just enjoy the process and the time in God’s word!

God Bless!

Bible Journaling – Acts 4:12

So we are on our third verse for the #scripturememorychallenge for our church.

Acts 4:12 ESV:

“And there is Salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

We joined forces with our friends, the Bookholdt’s, to do our memory video this past week. The verse gets explained in more detail:
https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fmdbookholdt%2Fvideos%2F10208497372665713%2F&show_text=0&width=560

Marc goes by Booky in these vids, and his son Justin is behind the camera. I can’t say I’ve ever had more fun memorizing scripture before! Lol.

So besides that vid, Eleanor and I did Bible journaling videos as well. I put mine to music and I think she’s going to narrate hers… we shall find out once I embed the vids.

So far, I’m mostly sticking to pens and lettering (poor lettering)… but I’m learning a little each time. I may branch out and put a sticker on it next time. Lol. Eleanor got a little crazy with misting, but that’s been her favorite thing for a while.

We are kinda tryin’ to get on a schedule so we hope to have a journaling vid or two every wednesday.

So here are the flix. We hope you enjoy them and we hope you’ll join us in bible journaling and scripture memory.

Have a blessed week!

Stay tuned for some scrapbooking on Friday!

Bible Journaling and the Scripture Memory Challenge

So we’re doing this thing at our church where we are memorizing scripture together. Pastor Pina at Shadyrest Bible Church is encouraging us to video ourselves reciting the scripture. HA! So far we have done one short vid from week one… and have enjoyed some of our friends videos. I think it’s a great idea and I hope more folks will join in! Even if you’re not a member at our church, feel free to join us! It would be awesome to get a giant flood of scripture videos going! And that can only lead to some enlightening conversation!

For week one, we did Romans 3:28

image

Like a lot of you, I’ve recently gotten into Bible Journaling. And I have to say this is probably the best way to memorize scripture! I do have a checklist for everyday where I can keep track of my verses, but when you actually take a good amount of time to sit down and write out the verse like this, embellishing it, and really thinking about each word… it tends to just stick in your brain like glue. The picture you’ve created with it allows your minds eye to just capture it and call upon it when needed.

So even though I haven’t done this with every verse I’ve tried to memorize, I am going to try to make an effort to do this with our church group memorization. For this one I did a process video. I admit, it’s not my favorite page I’ve done, but nonetheless, it serves it’s purpose of helping me to dive into and think about the text.

You can see half-way through I end up covering up a word and re-drawing it because I didn’t like the way it came out… but that’s the beauty of this… there are no mistakes! Just like life, you never arrive and you’re always learning.

This week’s verse was 2 Timothy 3: 16-17

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God2 may be complete, equipped for every good work.

image

It was a lot of words to fit, now that I look at it, I don’t know why I didn’t group the teaching part in with the other “for ____ ” parts.

I’ll have to remember that for my next journaling bible. lol.

Here’s my process video:

And here is Eleanor’s page!  She’s also memorizing scripture along with us!

image

So now onto the scripture memorization video! Have a blessed week!

12 Crafts of Christmas – Day 5 – Scripture Present Tags

It’s Monday and we’re gonna make this evenings craft light and easy.

image

All that is really required are some tags and some pens.. perhaps a stamp or watercolors.

You can grab these tags pretty cheap at any craft store, or you could make your own.  They also sell tag punches.

Here is a link to a tag/twine duo on Amazon: Kraft Tags

And here is a link to a Tag punch: PUNCH

So it all depends on how much you think you will actually use tags.  I end up using them more than can think of.  Most frequently I use them in scrapbooking. And sometimes they end up in my planner or as a bookmark.

I had a pile of these Kraft tags, so I decided to use them to make some decorations for my Christmas presents. For some reason, I love the look of a brown Kraft tag hanging off a gift or gift bag. I went pretty rustic and simple with my designs.

image

I started of by edging the tags with a dark ink. This is one of those little steps that I feel like if I skip, makes such a big difference. It really just adds such a nice punch to the border. Then I ended up putting a base of watercolor. Nothing special, just any kinda color to give it a pale coating. Little dripping on some, but mostly a light wash.  After that I decided what Scripture to use on each. And though you might be the type of person who hates their handwriting, I think this is the type of project that lends well to a variety of writing styles. Because of the craft and the watercolor, it kind of already has a crafty look, so I think the imperfect handwriting really lends well to it.

image

I do have one set of Scripture stamps from Close to my heart so I used one stamp from that for the Anchor tag. So I might have picked something else to go with this Anchor, like Hebrews 6:19, but in this instance I actually thought that block print went well visually with it. I have some anchor themed fabric, so I used that to eyeball while I was drawing this one. It was kinda a no-brainer because I used the fabric to make myself a zipper pouch to hold my pens and highlighters so it was sitting right next to me. I just kinda looked over and said… “Oh… that would make a good tag graphic…”

“19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil

 Hebrews 6

The pens I used to doodle with are these MICRON pens. They are the 005 size so ideal for super skinny lines.

image

So yea, I think before we get all wrapped up in the shopping spirit, we ought not to forget why we are here and why we are celebrating Christmas in the first place. It may not be the day exactly, but let our hearts be on the right track and our minds in the right place.

I made a nice, short video of the doodling if you so choose to set your eyes, other than that, enjoy this week of Thanksgiving and God Bless!

For some reason the music is taking a bit to attach itself to this vid, so if it’s still silent, I apologize… but should be together shortly!
