Bible Journaling – Esther

So this past Sunday I kinda woke up feeling less that peppy. lol…
But I have to say… after getting to church and as soon as my worship team showed up,  I immediately felt better. They are such an awesome group of people. They are my life group.

We are currently going through the book of Esther… and I love this book because it reads just like a story. Esther is an amazing woman who God used to carry out his work in saving the Jews from total destruction under the evil plans of Haman.

One thing Pastor said on Sunday that was very encouraging was this: “God works through flawed people and circumstances for his purpose.”

Well… that wasn’t the only thing… lol. but that was one of the thoughts I wrote in my bible. And it’s absolutely true. He can use us... every one of us… no matter what we think of ourselves. No matter what we think we can and can’t do. No matter how bottom-dwelling and helpless we feel.

img_3498

I struggle when it comes to music… and every time I feel like I should just call it quits, something seems to force me back in. I don’t know why. I always feel less than adequate. I had made a decision when we came to this church that I wasn’t even going to get involved in the musical aspect. And here I am, leading the team with my husband… lol. I’m not trying to compare myself to Esther. I don’t think saving a population of God’s people is written in my story. All I’m saying is, sometimes we just need to trust where God puts us. I don’t think I will ever feel completely right for the job. Perhaps this is an opportunity for me to grow. But if anyone is feeling this way too, perhaps this can encourage them. Just go with it. Try your best. There are no accidents. And pray… a lot.

So here is my process vid. I pretty much only used watercolor and some journaling pen. Much like this post… the journaling went in a completely different direction than originally planned… lol.

Thanks so much for stopping by! The music in this video is created by my amazing friend Jhoi!

Check his music out here:  https://soundcloud.com/jhoioh    He truly inspires me and countless others.

Have a great rest of your week!

God Bless!

Close to my heart- Sugar Rush – stamping and fussy cutting – Love Art

Lately Friday nights have been crafty.

img_1886

Last friday we stayed up late again with some watercolors.  I love how kids can just come up with 10 paintings in one night and adults can maybe…  maybe complete one.

img_3449

So I decided to snap a pic of her painting in her light up kitty ear headphones and scrap it… immediately.  lol.

The stamp set I used was the January Stamp of the month set.

This month is is this:

Easter Bunny

So you can get prepared for Easter!  lol.  It’s a good idea to take advantage of the stamp of the month, because you can get it for $5 with a qualifying order. And then it’s gone…. sniff sniff….

img_3450

So for this layout I made embellishments by stamping, coloring and fussy cutting. You can see this process in the video below.

Stuff I used in this layout:

Micro tip Scissors

Water colors

Water color pencils

Sugar Rush kit

Foam tape

img_3452

And then I made a coordinating pocket page for the other side.  This seems to be my go-to style.  One 12×12 and a pocket page….  lol.

We did a part 1 and part 2 process since it was kinda long…

We’ll be back for more crafting next week!  God Bless!

Bible Journaling- Psalm 42:1

Psalm 42:1

“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.” ESV

image

I actually drew this because my husband said to.  Lol.  Nothing mysterious or abstract… it’s quite a literal illustration of the words. It’s a female deer as of now… but who knows… maybe I’ll add some antlers down the line.  Maybe it’s my dog…   yea, I think I’ll add those antlers.

image

That’s a little better…

So I’m starting to really like using crayons in my Bible. They just seem to work really well with the type of paper…   who knew?!  Besides that I used mostly my journaling pens, a pencil, and a couple gelatos.

I asked some friends of mine if I could highlight some of their music in these videos and was so happy when they agreed!  So in this video, my friend Jhoi supplied the tracks.  You can check out his music here:

It’s just gorgeous gorgeous stuff! Definitely go take a listen.

And here’s my process video:

Thanks for taking some time with me and Jhoi today! Have a blessed week and just remember, when things get tough… be the deer. Pant for the flowing streams and everything else will follow rightly!

Bible Journaling – Genesis

Actually, this is more toward Bible Arting…  I wasn’t even going to add words, but I did. Not sure I like em yet. But sometimes you like things later. When it’s too fresh, you can’t look at things right. You have to give it the time test and then see how ya feel about it.

So … very exciting for me is this new Bible! I am a big-time Autumn fan, and this one has leaves all over the cover.

image

So this is my very first page in this Bible.

And… I decided to start with Genesis. And not because it’s the first book in the Bible, but because it’s been calling me to go back and re-visit it. And there also happens to be a giant series of excellent sermons done by a friend of ours who is a Pastor at Island Baptist Church in LBI on Genesis so I already have accompanying viewable commentary.

You can check that out here: HopeofLBI.com

Honestly, I kinda thought I would lean more towards the chunky cluttered look for this new Bible, but after doing one page, I think it may be going in the black pen and crayon direction with little to no over-time expanding width.

image

I think it’s just a pretty bible on it’s own. So when I started drawing, I kinda got zoned out. And it reminded me of when I was young and how I used to zone out for hours listening to music and drawing. Like your brain gets taken over and you’re just floating. Sometimes it happens when you’re playing music too… I guess it could happen doing anything you enjoy. Sometimes I wonder if this is the real means to “getting high” that God gave us. I have no idea what that feels like from drugs… but I can imagine it is a sublime temporary escape. I do know what drunk feels like, and I used to feel like I had to have a drink before playing out somewhere or going to a social event so that I wouldn’t be so nervous, shy, and unfriendly. And I remember my late night song-writing rituals involved a glass of merlot. And the kind of songs that followed were tributes to sin. Shocker.

How did this turn into a past time confession? I mean, I don’t think I drank a lot, usually one glass of something was enough… but like I said. It was a means to change myself and how I related to this world. I now know that I don’t need that. I still feel nervous and anxious in certain situations, but in every instance I have to remind myself that I can’t do anything alone. I have to give it to God because it’s too big for me. And it’s awesome to get totally wrapped up in creating using what the Ultimate Creator gave us.

image

It always looks like I’m giving myself an F for my work in these pics…   maybe I should use a different plate to hold my little pencils and erasers…

When I think about Genesis 1, I think about all the awesome things God created. And though it talks about day, and night, and land, and water, and animals, and man, and all that…  TREES.… are my fav. It’s no secret. I think a lot of people like drawing trees. They’re just so pretty. So for me, this represents on of my favorite things God created. And I kinda drew them in an autumn state, because that’s also my favorite season as I said earlier. And it just goes along with the style of the Bible. So… yea. Or maybe it’s just that I finally watched the movie version of “Into the Woods…”  Mother said, straight ahead, not to delay or be mislead! I should’ve heeded her advice… but he seemed so nice…

Ok, so I did a process vid and sped it up to 6 minutes… though in real time probably took about an hour.

I mainly just used my journaling pens, and gelatos and crayons to color it in. And sometimes I use my bible highlighters to color as well. So I think I did that a little bit in the end just to bring out certain words…

image

So I may add more trees as the mood strikes, but I think this is enough for the Genesis forest so far.

Here’s the speedy process:

Happy Friday and have an awesome weekend!

Love,

Bible Journaling – John 13:34-35

image

So this week’s (actually last week’s) Bible verse for memorization is John 13:35.

But I decided to add in 34 for my Bible journaling purposes.  I wanted the main idea of loving one another to stick out. So I used the text from part of verse 34, but boxed around the whole thing so I would be reminded to pay attention to the rest of it.

ESV John 13 vs. 34-35

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

image

“By this all people will know that you are my disciples”

I try to tell this to the kids in my life frequently… and it’s a really hard thing for kids to understand because there’s a level of self that’s a bit bigger than it should be when you’re young. I tell them that just because someone does something hurtful to you, that doesn’t mean you need to do something even more hurtful back. There is no need for “get even.” The best thing you can give back after being scorned is love. Like one example our Pastor gave; tipping big for the absolute worst service at a restaurant. Wouldn’t that look different than giving the usual lousy tip for lousy service. That is what makes you look like a Christian.

This week Pastor had us write down something on an index card. He had us write down something that was done to us that really hurt us and also who did it. Then he had us tear it up and urged us to forgive that person in our hearts if we haven’t already. No good can come from hoarding grudges. I might try this with the kids, but really I’m open to ideas. I’m not sure if you just don’t get it till you’re older… but I also feel like most adults would rather get even then forgive and show love. I’m by no means perfect, I hold onto those negative feelings as well as anybody, but I’ve learned to forgive just like I hope I’ve been forgiven for past hurts I have dealt. After all, usually what you’re mad about really isn’t that important in the end. And forgiveness is so rewarding.

So here is the process for the Bible Journaling. I kept it pretty simple again, and actually I used Roo’s bible this time because I kinda messed mine up… but that Barnes and Noble giftcard I’m using to spread paint just got emptied on another journaling Bible online. It was a present from one of my piano students (THANK YOU!) I had to spend an extra $3 over the $25 GC, but there is a coupon running now.. so I got a Bible that was already on sale, then an extra 20% off that… and free shipping, so the total was $28.  So my first journaling Bible might serve as a tester now… we’ll see.

Here’s the coupon link.

So HERE is actually the process video:

The lettering was actually inspired by a sticker…  I went to use it, but it was too big, so I just copied the style. Then I added some more stickers at the end that kinda went with the color theme.

Hope everyone is having an inspiring week so far!  God Bless!

Bible Journaling

Fitty

So Roo and I cracked open our new Journaling Bibles so we thought we’d share a couple of the pages we were working on.

The bible we both have is the ESV Journaling Bible from Crossway.  Besides being adorable, it’s small enough to carry around and enjoy wherever whenever. Available on Amazon here: ESV journaling bible

I started in Nehemiah because that’s where we are at church right about now. My first journal was actually something our Pastor said because I loved it so much. “You cannot hide a heart that has been broken by God.”

image

Though I plan to be pretty messy with this Bible, I like to kinda jot important things on sticky notes first, then decide what I want the focus of the journaling to be.  So most of the time, it will probably be my favorite scripture or passage from the pages, but sometimes, you just need a beautiful statement like this to look back on.

And as Roo and I were journaling together, we decided to go back and highlight all the verses she had already learned in Awana, so I did the same in mine.  So of course, we started with John 3:16:

image

So if you don’t know the Gospel, there ya have it right there:

image

Which is the whole point of EVERYTHING…  funny how I didn’t learn that in the Roman Catholic church growing up…

Roo went on to 1 Corinthians as well. She used some stamping on this page and then actually colored them in with highlighters. We both sponged a bit of ink for our backgrounds.

image

We are having so much fun doing this, and I think it’s really helping her and I memorize scripture as well.  We hope you’ll join us and share your journaling! God Bless and have a great week!
